Another application period is now open to apply for private wetlands landowners to participate in the BirdReturns Spring and Summer Wetlands Programs. Here are some details on the program that floods private wetlands:
We are excited to announce that applications for the 2025 BirdReturns Spring and Summer Wetland Programs are officially open!
Participating private wetlands play a vital role in creating and maintaining high-quality habitats for migrating and nesting birds in the Central Valley—all while receiving financial incentives for their efforts.
Key Program Details
- Application Period: January 1st – January 22nd, 2025
- Eligible Regions: Suisun Marsh, Delta, Sacramento Valley, Tulare, and San Joaquin Valley
What You’ll Do
- Spring Wetlands: Provide critical habitat for migratory shorebirds through gradual water drawdowns in April.
- Summer Wetlands: Support local nesting and brood-rearing birds by maintaining deep flooded habitat into July.
