| OXNARD, CALIF. 9 JAN 2022 – – Entries are being sought for the Outdoor Writers Association of California (OWAC) annual Vachini High School Scholarship contest for outdoor writing and photography. This prestigious contest is open to high school juniors and seniors throughout California’s public and private school system. Entries are being accepted until April 1, 2023: application is free. The contest was founded in honor of the late wife of Don Vachini, one of California’s foremost outdoor journalists. It recognizes excellence in writing and photography focusing on the outdoors. Last year OWAC awarded prizes to 19 California high school students from six different schools and academies. Written submissions of 500 words or more on outdoor subjects are being sought, in formats including essay, news article, personal experience, poetry, documentary, blog and research studies. Photographers are invited to submit a portfolio of three photos of any combination of outdoor subjects (fauna, flora, scenic, people). A panel of professional journalists will judge the entries utilizing a point system. Cash prizes are offered for first, second and third place winners. Deadline is April 1, 2023.
