Humboldt Officials Looking Into Shooting Deaths Of Sow Bear, Cub In Eureka

A sow black bear and her cub were found shot to death in Eureka, which will be investigated as an alleged poaching incident. Here are some details from KRCR TV in Redding:

Authorities say the case remains an open and active investigation. Neighbors who live along Ridgewood Drive say the shooting has left them shaken and disturbed. “A lot of people are really upset about high powered rifles being shot so close to their homes,” one community member, who asked to remain anonymous, said. “I really hope that the person who had the cruelty to do this is held accountable,” they said. “It’s hard for me to get the image out of my mind, the cub with it’s eye shot out on a public street.”

California law does allow bear hunting in Humboldt County, but hunters must follow strict rules. Lieutenant Supervisor, Matthew Renner, said hunters are required to have a license and purchase a bear tag from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. He explained that there are specific hunting seasons in place, including an archery-only season and a general season where firearms, muzzleloaders, and shotguns are permitted.

General bear season this year begins October 11, 2025 and runs through December 28, 2025, which archery season began August 16, 2025 and continues through September 7, 2025.
