A San Francisco commercial fishing boat contained some alleged more than 2,000 pounds of illegally caught salmon and halibut.

Here’s more from KRON 4 News in San Francisco:

A fisherman in San Francisco hid fillets of salmon behind a false wall on their boat docked at Pier 45 in an attempt to deceive authorities, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) announced Monday. In all, officials said the commercial trawl boat owner was caught with over 2,000 pounds of unlawfully caught fish not declared for retail sale.

The angler was under surveillance by CDFW when wildlife officers said they watched them unload a number of burlap sacks off of the boat and into a vehicle. After the fisherman left the scene, authorities found them at a restaurant where they attempted to hide their fish and flee, according to officials.

The boat owner had several halibut, sole, sanddabs and filleted salmon in their possession, which had not been declared as commercial catch as required, CDFW said. Officials found and seized an additional 2,365 pounds of halibut in the investigation.

CDFW released the following statement

Commercial fisherman trying to get away with an unlawful catch can’t fool CDFW wildlife officers. Recently, one such angler coming ashore at San Francisco’s Pier 45 was found trying to deceive authorities with a false wall on their boat. Behind the false wall were fillets of salmon, a fishery closed since 2023 to help declining populations recover.

Under the surveillance of wildlife officers, the owner of the commercial trawl vessel was also seen unloading several burlap sacks out of their boat and into their vehicle before leaving the scene. The owner was later found at a restaurant where they attempted to flee and hide fish. The owner was found in possession of several halibut, filleted salmon, sole and sanddabs that had not been declared as a commercial catch for retail sale.

In addition, a load of 2,365 pounds of halibut was seized and a formal complaint submitted to the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

CDFW proceeded with declaring the seized halibut the following morning, selling the fish and donating proceeds to the Fish and Game Preservation Fund.
