Bear Kills Off-Leash Dog Around Lake Oroville To Protect Cubs

A small dog was killed by a bear after chasing two bear cubs at Loafer Creek within Lake Oroville State Recreation Area in Butte County, according to California State Parks.

State Parks says the incident happened around 11:30 a.m. Friday. A man and woman were walking two dogs on the Roy Rogers Trail when they encountered an adult bear and two cubs.

According to State Parks, one of the dogs got loose from its leash and chased the cubs up a tree. The adult bear ran after the dog. The owner tried to use bear spray while retreating from the area but was unsuccessful.
