Lone Pine Deli Honors Manzanar’s Fishing Legacy With A Special Sandwich

One of the stories I’m most proud of during my time here is a 2019 profile of a documentary film, The Manazanar Fishing Club, which honored the World War II-era American citizens of Japanese descent, who after the 1941 Pearl Harbor attack were sent to concentration camps like Manzanar in the Eastern Sierra. Several prisoners managed to sneak away from the camp and fish for trout in nearby waters, as told beautifully by director Cory Shiozaki, the son of Japanese-American parents who were also interred at one of several Western regional camps.

The movie is now being honored by a local Eastern Sierra deli/cafe in the form of a speciality menu sandwich. Here are some details from Shiozaki:

In recognition for efforts of the volunteer work of everyone connected to the Manzanar Fishing Club, Pam Daugherty, owner of the famous Alabama Hills Cafe & Bakery (https://www.alabamahillscafe.com/) is honoring the Manzanar Fishing Club by naming a sandwich after us at the soon to be Grand Opening’s new location adjacent to the Pizza Factory before the end of the year.  Address:  325 S. Main Street, Lone Pine, CA 93545

The Manzanar Fishing Club sandwich will be:

Avocado, roast turkey, roast beef, lettuce, tomato, mayo, choice of bread with cheese options.

I am extremely grateful to all of you who have supported efforts in preserving the memory of Manzanar by donating your time and effort with the walking tour/screening and litter pickup for the Manzanar Fishing Club Adopt-A-Highway cleanup sign.
