We rolled out of 2020 having had a solid run on the rockfish this final month of the year. So for the time being that rockfish and sheephead get a break (these species are no take or closed for two months ) and we will transition on to a more winter approach of deep water structure fishing. With that, sculpin will become the focus on the 3/4 day trips. Last couple days we’ve had plenty of opportunity and good return for the efforts. We’ve been fishing the 5-inch Viejos swim baits on a dropper loop and it’s been a perfect set up for the sculpin as it’s helped us almost solely catch the sculpin.
Half day fishing seeing more bass action as well. Some fish on the sinker rigs and some on the artificial stuff like the plastic lures. A 1.5 oz lead head and squid catching some nice sand bass and sculpin as the deeper spots start to see some effort too. Some nice fish caught and released too like lots of sheephead released. Halibut derby nothing new same fish in same spots. Hard to nail down why it’s been a bit tricky. So it’s a start to 2021 and we’ll see how the next few weeks play out. I have a feeling it will be a series of cookie cutter weeks as long as we have some decent weather.
