When I wrote about Canadian-born, London, Great Britain spear angler Valentine Thomas in our September, 2015 cover story, I asked her if she would make it out to California sometime to do a little bit of diving and spear fishing. Consider that in her global adventures she’d swam in far warmer and clearer waters.

“I went to Southern California with my sister once, but I didn’t get to do any fishing. I think the water is pretty cold and not too clear. Murky water means there’s a bigger chance to run into sharks,” Valentine told me last year. “But I’ve heard it’s a little warmer and clearer around San Diego. But I definitely (wouldn’t mind living there), as I’m ready to start thinking about moving away from London. I can’t take this rainy, horrible weather for too much longer.”

Sure enough, Valentine did quite literally take the plunge in the Pacific and got in some of the bluefin tuna action that’s been buzzing for quite some time now off the sunny Orange County coast.
